Five care habits that make clothes last
Small changes to how you wash and store clothes add seasons to their life.
The most sustainable garment is the one you already own. A few easy habits keep colours true and shapes sharp for much longer.
1. Wash cold, wash less
Cold water protects colour and fibres. Many pieces — especially denim and outer layers — only need a wash every few wears.
2. Turn prints and darks inside out
It reduces friction in the machine and keeps prints from cracking or fading.
3. Dry in the shade
Strong sunlight bleaches colour quickly. Dry bright and dark pieces in the shade, flat or on a hanger.
4. Iron on the reverse
Especially for prints and embroidery. Steam is gentler still.
5. Fold knits, hang shirts
Hanging stretches knitwear and tees out of shape; folding keeps them neat. Shirts and dresses, on the other hand, prefer a hanger.
